3 Careers You Haven't Considered Pursuing But Should

You don't have to go into engineering or the hard sciences to find a decent career.

We all know that studying physics or engineering will probably get you a well-paying job straight out of college. That’s why your parents have been suggesting it for the last 10 years. Unfortunately not everyone has the necessary interest or talent to work their way through years of advanced math and hard sciences. Luckily, tech companies aren’t the only people who are hiring. Here are a few careers in fields that you probably don’t know are growing. As it turns out, there are a lot of things that you can study that allow you to find a decent career.

Librarian

Before I started researching for this article I would have relegated librarians to the β€œdying professions” column, but libraries are actually thriving. Libraries, as it turns out, view themselves primarily as the managers and purveyors of information and education, and the rise of the internet has given them more material to work with, rather than making them obsolete. Libraries have evolved, and librarians are constantly pushing the boundaries of what libraries can do for their communities. This combines to make library work not only interesting and rewarding, but also a fairly stable career in an otherwise volatile labor market.

Administrative Health

Speaking of growing fields, it’s no great secret that we’re facing a huge shortage of nurses. What’s less well-known is that along with those nurses, the administrative staff that supports nurses and manages patient information needs to increase as well. Though they tend to get lumped together as all the β€œnon-doctors” in the health industry the careers that are available are actually very varied and includes health management, medical lab science, and data management. Unlike doctors and nurses, these professions don’t require much patient interaction. They do, however, require dealing with a lot of very stressed and overworked medical professionals.

Anti-Hacking

The exponential growth and global adoption of the internet has made the world a lot more accessible and convenient for all of us. Unfortunately, that includes cybercriminals, who are increasingly able to cooperate, share ideas, and develop their skills. As a result cybercrime and cyberterrorism have been growing rapidly in the last decade. Large businesses, governments, banks, and private internet security companies are scrambling to protect their data and prevent attacks on their servers and their data. Not only does that mean that there are a lot of jobs available in IT, it means that you can contribute to ensuring that the private information of millions of people who use the internet every day (including yourself) remains safe, and that the internet remains a useful tool for everyday people.

Politics

We’re not talking about running for office (necessarily) here; this is about all of those jobs that thousands of people need to do in order to get someone into office in the first place, and then to run the massive machine that is our actual government. Someone has to write speeches, manage campaigns, develop platforms, advocate for issues, and manage social media, and little to none of that is done by an actual politician.
