DA: Fight Over Prostitute's Payment Ends in Deadly Shooting of Naked Man

A convicted felon was arraigned Tuesday for allegedly killing a Daly City man in April outside of his home and then shooting the man’s mother after she watched the murder, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Demond Spikes, 34, of Hayward, allegedly fled the scene with a prostitute after shooting a naked Marcus Brackenridge in the backyard of his home in the 500 block of Skyline Drive, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.

Arriving officers found Brackenridge lying on the ground at about 5:50 a.m. on April 13.

Spikes allegedly stood over Brackenridge and shot him in the abdomen and head after arguing with him over money with the prostitute standing nearby, prosecutors said.

Brackenridge’s mother watched the murder from the home’s sliding glass doors and called out as her son was shot. Spikes allegedly then shot the mother through the sliding glass door, hitting her in the abdomen, prosecutors said.

Spikes allegedly fled with the prostitute. Police eventually connected him to the murder and obtained a warrant for his arrest. He was taken into custody last Thursday in Sacramento, according to the district attorney’s office.

He is charged with murder, attempted murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling and weapons violations. He did not enter a plea when he appeared in court Tuesday and is next scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 21.

If convicted, Spikes could face life in prison since he has two strikes for prior felony convictions, prosecutors said.

The prostitute who allegedly fled the scene with Spikes has since died, prosecutors said Wednesday, but details about her death were not immediately being released.
