One lucky lottery player in the San Mateo area is about to be $228 million richer.

Lottery officials confirm Thursday that the sole winning ticket of Wednesday night’s Powerball jackpot— played in 43 other states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands— was purchased right here in the Peninsula. It’s worth a total of $228.5 million!

The ticket was sold at Key Market in San Mateo, located at 500 South Norfolk Street. For selling that ticket, the store owners will get a $1 million bonus, according to lottery officials.

As of Thursday at 10:30 a.m., the winner had not yet come forward. So if you have your ticket handy, here are the winning numbers: 7, 14, 24, 41, 21, and the Powerball number was 26.

The initial jackpot was estimated at $225 million, but that ”...was later revised to an estimated $228.5 million based on strong nationwide sales,” California lottery officials said. The cash option is estimated at $136.1 million before federal taxes.


Another millionaire was made in California in the same Powerball drawing, with a ticket sold at Quick N-EZ located at 5480 West Shaw Avenue in Fresno.

“Another ticket purchased in Fresno matched five numbers and just missed the Powerball number,” lottery officials said Thursday. “That ticket is worth $1,264,341!”
