HULA PAHU: The Sacred Dances

With deep and resounding rhythms that have been known to stir ancient spirits, the hula pahu is indeed a sacred art form within the realm of hula. The hula pahu is not only noted for its distinct sounds and movements, but also its rarity. In ancient Hawai`i, hula pahu was reserved primarily for religious purposes and was performed only for a select audience. It is only through the formal training of kumu (teacher) to haumana (student) over the generations that a few of these special chants and dances have survived intact over the centuries.

Hālau O Keikiali'i, under the direction of Kumu Hula Kawika Keikiali’i Alfiche, presents a spectacular stage production entitled “Hula Pahu – Sacred Dances” that pays tribute to hula masters past and present – including Keikiali`i’s own teachers: George Lanakilakeikiahiali`i Na`ope and Rae Kahikilaulani Fonseca. A truly extraordinary treat is to have yet another esteemed mentor on stage - Master Kumu Hula Hokulani Holt of Maui. Aunty Hoku (as she is lovingly called) is a world-renowned kumu hula, well-respected Hawaiian culture specialist, founder of multiple cultural organizations and educational programs throughout Hawai`i, and is currently the Cultural Programs Director at the distinguished Maui Arts & Cultural Center. Keikiali`i states "the true mark of respect is for me to honor the memory of my teachers and their training that has helped shape my life and made a distinct impact on the development of who I am today and my approach to Hula".

With a collection of ancient dances and some new compositions by Keikiali`I himself, experience the time-
honored tradition of hula pahu that has been passed down through this esteemed hula lineage – and allow your spirits to be awakened by the exhilarating rhythms and stunning sights of “Hula Pahu – Sacred Dances”. Dances with the Pahu Hula, the sacred shark skinned drum.
