During this pandemic times, Covid can’t take away romance, so always put romance in your daily menu. Valentine’s Day started by St. Valentines. You can say it with a card, flowers, chocolates or a poem.

FOR SANGYE, VALENTINE’S DAY 2022

chaotic are the nights and days
when Amor roams your dreams and stays
violent sweetness stains your day
Multas per gentes et multa per aequora vectus
through many nations and over many seas,
wrote the Roman poet Catullus centuries ago
lamenting the death of his brother.
the words come to me now
as I think of Omicron
spreading through many nations and over many seas
and how it affected you
after a “party” given (to put it as mildly as possible)
in foolish, innocent ignorance.
our relationship began with the joy of Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day 2022 is a look-we-have-come-through,
healing after a month of having to avoid one another––
my luck not to catch Covid
but watching the pain and misery you had to endure.

but there is another Latin tag:
Amor Vincit Omnia et nos cedamus amori
Love Conquers All and let us all yield to love
the line from Virgil
followed later by a painting by Caravaggio
showing the winged boy
trampling all human endeavor.
love moves us and moves everything
say these hot-blooded Italians.
Dante: “the love that moves the sun and other stars.”
I carry their genes as well (Calabrese)
and joy as you come near
to press your lips on mine
and whisper (though not in words Italian, English, Latin)
