Man Accused of Shooting at Daly City Doctor Found Not Competent, Committed to Hospital

An elderly man accused of shooting at a Daly City doctor in April was committed to a mental hospital Tuesday after being found incompetent to stand trial, San Mateo County prosecutors said Wednesday.

Raymond Iwase, 85, allegedly entered a medical office building at 1500 Southgate Ave. at about 1:30 p.m. on April 23 and shot at a doctor working there, threatening to kill him and yelling, “You gave me a shot in the past and you made me sick,” prosecutors said.

The doctor ducked around a corner and yelled at others in the building to get out. Someone in the building called 911 and occupants were evacuated or told to shelter in place as officers looked for the gunman, according to the district attorney’s office.

No one was injured in the shooting. Witnesses identified Iwase as the gunman and he was arrested at his home on Plymouth Circle in Daly City hours later.

Prosecutors charged him with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

Two doctors’ reports received by the court in August indicated that Iwase was not competent to stand trial.

On Tuesday, he was sent to Napa State Hospital according to that recommendation, prosecutors said.
