Run! For a Good Cause

Help raise awareness about postpartum depression and other perinatal mood disorders during your spare time this weekend.

Your teens are holding a car wash at the high school Saturday. The grandparents volunteered to take the younger children to a movie Sunday afternoon. Your tweens take tap on Wednesday evening.  It’s your time. Take it.

Each week, we’ll tell you about one great idea to give you a much deserved break, and make your life a little easier, maybe a whole lot easier.

For this week’s Great Escape, why not make your break from work and filial obligations count toward something greater? Minnesota-based non-profit Jenny’s Light and Peninsula mother-oriented fitness group Mamacita Fitness invites moms (and anyone else interested) to take part in this Sunday’s in Los Gatos. Working to treat and raise awareness of perinatal mood disorders like postpartum depression, Jenny’s Light hopes to raise funds while helping local mothers bond at this weekend’s event.

Gather your fellow mothers and head to Vasona Park in Los Gatos at 10am to run or walk either a 5K or 10K flat course, with an entrance fee that will go toward funding treatment of various oft-unrecognized perinatal mood disorders. Meet other moms who utilize the support and services of Mamacita Fitness, which focuses on making exercise a fun and realistic option for new and expecting mothers.

This escape works for moms who want to bond with or without the kids, as those who choose to bring the little ones can accompany them on their own 1K Fun Run. Whether you make it a women-only bonding session or turn the day into a workout the whole family can enjoy, the fruits of this day-off’s labor will help other mothers cope with what was once a problem women had to deal with alone.
