Sen. Hill Declares CHP Officer A Community Hero!
The Peninsula officer was honored in Los Altos Friday for saving a choking 5-year-old.

California Highway Patrol Officer Art Montiel, 5-year-old Miguel Alvarez and state Senator Jerry Hill celebrated Montiel being declared a Community Hero for the 13th Senate District for his quick thinking and swift actions to save Miguel, who began choking while out on a grocery shopping trip with his mother in Redwood City on August 22.
The honor was bestowed Friday at Gallery 9 in Los Altos.

Montiel, who was off-duty and happened to be grocery shopping, came upon Miguel and his mother in great distress in the store’s produce section. He assessed the child’s condition and immediately applied techniques to dislodge a grape that was causing Miguel to choke.
