2 Jump From Moving Van In High-Speed LA Chase

During an hour-long police chase traversing Los Angeles, a driver and her passenger both made rolling exits from a moving van.

LOS ANGELES, CA - A police chase in Los Angeles got weird Tuesday morning — even by LA standards.

As police chased a possibly stolen van across nearly every freeway in the city, the passenger first jumped out of the moving van. It ended when the driver, a woman, also rolled out of the vehicle onto the roadway in Downtown Los Angeles.

The chase began shortly after 4 a.m. in the in the area of Soto Street and Lancaster Avenue in Boyle Heights, said Los Angeles police Officer Irma Mota. It traversed parts of the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys before the California Highway Patrol took over the chase in the Irwindale area where the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway meets the Foothill (210) Freeway, Mota said.

At one point, the driver found herself stuck in traffic on the San Diego (405) Freeway, which was shut down because of two other accidents. So she exited an onramp, weaving through oncoming traffic. That's when her passenger hopped out of the moving van, rolling across the road in the West LA area. It wasn't immediately clear if that person was found.

About an hour after the chase began, the driver decided to make her exit. She hopped out of the van in the area of Maple Avenue and Fifth Street. The unmanned van kept going, crashing into the curbing and into a pole. The driver rolled into the street and waiting for police to cuff her. She was taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of evading police, officials said.
