LOS ANGELES, CA - A horse whose carcass was found on a public street near Sylmar appears to have died accidentally, police said today.

The dead animal was found about 10:30 a.m. on April 9 in the 11700 block of Kagel Canyon Road, according to Detective Eric Bixler of the Los Angeles Police Department's Foothill Division.

The horse was found with its tail tied to a telephone pole with a rope and appeared to have been subject to intentional, malicious abuse, Bixler said at the time.

The animal was transported to San Bernardino for a necropsy.

According to Officer Tony Im of the LAPD's Media Relations office, an investigation revealed the horse was not shot or beaten, as originally suspected, but appears to have died while struggling -- and possibly strangling itself -- inside a horse trailer.

He said it was an accident and not a case of animal abuse.
