215 Freeway Donkey Dash

Temecula,CA - On Tuesday, five donkeys roamed onto the 215 freeway and were struck, then killed by a passing cement truck along with two other vehicles, according to a City News Service Report.

At 2:25 a.m. California Highway patrol officers received a call that a herd of donkeys had entered northbound lanes of the freeway from the Center Street off-ramp, said Officer Juan Quintero.

Not long after, the officers received an update that the donkeys had been hit by a truck. They also learned that two other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Upon arriving on the scene, five of the donkeys from the herd had died. The number of donkeys and how they wandered onto the freeway is still under investigation, Quintero said.

The impact caused the truck to "jackknife across all northbound lanes of the freeway," making CHP close the free way at around 2:40 a.m. Traffic was diverted off the freeway towards Center Street.

One driver complained of pain and was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, Quintero said.

CHP is looking for any information that could be provided on the impromptu donkey dash. You can call the Accident Investigation Unit at 951-637-8000 if you have any information.
