6 DUI Motorists Arrested At Temecula Checkpoint

TEMECULA, CA — A DUI checkpoint set up over the weekend in the city of Temecula led to the arrests of six people suspected of driving under the influence, the Southwest Sheriff's Station reported.

Deputies set up the checkpoint at 8 p.m. Friday in the 40400 block of Winchester Road. The operation ran through 1 a.m. Saturday.

In addition to the DUI arrests, eight unlicensed drivers were cited/arrested for operating a vehicle, four were cited/arrested for driving on a suspended license and seven vehicles were towed, according to the sheriff's department.

"Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests," the department said. "The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired."

It's not immediately clear if the DUI arrests were due to alcohol, illegal drugs, and/or legal medications, and arrestee names were not immediately provided.

The sheriff's department warned that some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs can interfere with driving and lead to a DUI arrest.

Drivers charged with DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license, the sheriff's department said.
