Chaparral High School’s NJROTC recently hosted their annual sports day on October 15th 2016. Naval Science Instructor Senior Chief McGovern got cadets from 11 different schools, and 3 different branches of JROTC programs to come together and compete. There were many activities to participate in, including: push-ups, sit-ups, timed arm hang, pull-ups, shuttle run, 1600 meter run, basketball, volleyball, softball, boardwalk, dizzy izzy, wheel-barrow races, and the much anticipated tug-of-war. The event was run by the Parent Support Group, local Army soldiers, and volunteer cadets from Chaparral High School.
Cadets of all ranks and grades enjoyed the event, year after year. It brings the JROTC community together, both Marine Corps, Air Force, and Navy JROTCs. Freshman Lillie Dufour said, “I enjoyed working with the Parent Support Group, because it was fun seeing all the different cadets come and go through the area.” The effort and leadership that went into making this day as enjoyable as possible, was extensive. The PSG spent a great deal of time making and selling food to the people participating. McGovern and the cadets in charge of the event put in a lot of hardwork to make things run as smooth as possible. Senior Maria Escobar, who helped organize the whole day, said, “I enjoyed working sports day because I got to make new friends from different schools, and see the ones I made before.” From keeping score, to handing out food, photographing events, or even leading their team to victory in their given sport or activity, everyone was able to enjoy a fun day of competition.
McGovern, the PSG, and the cadets who volunteered worked diligently to make the event run smoothly and allow everyone to have fun. Chaparral won first place in the basketball tournament, third place in the shuttle run, as well as several individual awards. All schools who participated did their best and exercised excellent sportsmanship. Chaparral is thankful to all those who attended and helped make this year’s sports day a huge success.
