Coronavirus Cases Reach New Single-Day High In Riverside County

Friday's numbers show 1,431 new infections, bringing total cases to 24,765 countywide.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — Since the July 4 holiday, 51 people have died in Riverside County due to coronavirus complications and 4,210 new infections have been reported, updated county data show.

For the third straight day, Riverside County posted its highest single-day increase of new COVID-19 cases. Friday's numbers show 1,431 new infections, bringing total cases to 24,765 countywide. Out of that total, 9,367 people have recovered from the illness.

Friday's updated death toll of 537 people countywide includes four since Thursday's reporting.

COVID-19 hospitalizations were reported at 526 Friday — up by 13 patients since Thursday. Of the total number, 116 are in ICU, which marks a decrease of one since the previous day.

The latest data from Riverside County Emergency Management Department show the county's ICU beds are at 95% capacity and sub-acute beds are at 76% capacity. COVID-19 patients are taking up 14.4% of the bed space, the data show.

Four COVID-19 patients from Imperial County are currently receiving care at Riverside County hospitals. Eight inmates are now hospitalized in Riverside County, according to the latest data.

Testing stands at 276,634 — an increase of 3,653 since Thursday.

Of those who've tested positive for the virus in Riverside County, 85% are under 65 years old. Out of these positive cases, 159 have died — 135 of the deaths are in the 45- to 64-year-old age bracket.

Deaths in the 65- to 84-year-old age range stand at 259; 119 people aged 85 and older have died due to COVID-19 complications.

Riverside County men are dying from COVID-19 complications at far greater numbers than women — 305 compared to 232, according to the data. People of color are also at greater risk of death. According to county figures, 243 Hispanic/Latinx people have died from COVID-19 complications, and 34 African Americans have lost their lives to the illness.
