Street kids from Nicaragua, as a part of the talent development group “The Nicavangelists”, are coming to Southern CA and will be performing in Temecula on Sunday, September 8. The Nicavangelists are at-risk youths from the streets of Managua, and through a talent-development program, they receive food, housing, clothing, an education and the chance to develop skills in performance arts.

The Nicavangelists seek a bright future to share their hope, talents and culture with the world. Their street theater production focuses on current cultural conditions in the context of a Biblical story. The core components of the production are Miskito folkdance, Tricking (an art form evolved from African slaves which incorporates elements of martial arts and gymnastics) , Breakdance, Latino Ballroom-styled dance genres, Modern Dance, Drama and Song. The production is completely choreographed by The Nicavangelists’ troupe members, with assistance from the director of Nicaragua’s premier Academy of Dance. These kids perform with high energy and precision. To highlight the socio-political crisis in Nicaragua, the Nicavangelists perform all over the US and in Europe and Central America. They are also here to share their views and personal experiences of the current situation in Nicaragua, the government repression, genocide etc. Last year they were attacked in Nicaragua with gunfire, confronted by paramilitaries on a killing spree and followed home by masked men carrying large weapons.

The director, mentor and teacher of the Nicavangelists, Jed Brian’s describes them as: “Kids, teenagers, youth... living in poverty, forced into prostitution, fighting for survival in gangs... the fatherless, the orphaned, the rejected and abused... each one is special & possesses potential for greatness.” Jed is on a mission to give a future to these kids.

The Nicavangelists will be performing at 3:00 pm at the Temecula Masonic Center, 27895 Diaz Rd. (across from the DMV). There is no admission charge but a free-will offering will be taken to support the Nicavangelists. The group will also be at the United Church of the Valley’s morning worship at 10 am on September 8 where they will share some of their dances and their stories. The United Church of the Valley meets at the Temecula Masonic Center.
