Sculpting the Hand in Clay
A two-day hands-on workshop with instructor Charles Snowden at Fallbrook School of the Arts

Sculpting the Hand in Clay
Two-Day Ceramics Workshop
In this hands-on ceramics workshop, students will learn how to sculpt a life-sized representation of their own hand using clay. Working from direct observation, participants will explore the structure, proportions, and gestures of the hand while developing fundamental hand-building and sculpting techniques.

We will begin with pinching and coiling methods to construct the palm and establish the overall form and position of the hand. Students will then learn how to build and articulate each finger, creating a balanced and proportionate sculpture. Through guided demonstrations and individual instruction, we will explore techniques for refining, smoothing, and adding surface detail to bring each hand to life.
Students will have the opportunity to develop realistic details such as knuckles, wrinkles, fingernails, and veins, while learning how subtle changes in form and surface can create a convincing sense of anatomy and movement. More advanced students, or those who finish early, will also be encouraged to experiment with personalizing and adorning their sculptures.

Day 1 — Sculpting & Finishing
6 hours
Students will begin by selecting a hand position or gesture to use as their reference. We will cover the fundamentals of constructing the palm and building individual fingers, with an emphasis on proportion, structure, and natural articulation.
Once the basic form is established, we will refine the sculpture through smoothing and surface development. Students will learn how to add anatomical details—including knuckles, wrinkles, fingernails, and veins—to enhance the life-like qualities of the finished piece.
The day will conclude with final smoothing and preparation of the sculptures for bisque firing.
Day 2 — Glazing
3 hours
Once the sculptures have been bisque fired, we will explore glazing techniques for finishing the hands. Students will learn methods for applying glazes at both low-fire and mid-range temperatures, with guidance on colour, surface, layering, and application.
Students will have the opportunity to consider how their choice of glaze can enhance the sculptural qualities of the hand and develop a personal finish.
Level: All levels welcome — beginning through advanced
Workshop Fee: $170 includes material fee (glaze, clay, tools, firing etc.)
