Temecula's Measure S Passes: New Tax Coming to Town

The county's final official election results are out.

TEMECULA, CA – Nearly a month after Election Day, the Riverside County Registrar of Voters has certified the results of the races. It is now official that Temecula voters passed Measure S.

Measure S won by a total of 776 votes, according to the registrar's office. A total of 19,711 ballots were cast in favor of the one percent tax hike. There were 18,935 "no" votes.

Immediately following the election, preliminary results had the "no" votes ahead, but as absentee and mail-in ballots were added to to the total tally the "yes" side edged up.

The city's sales tax rate will jump by a full percentage point under the approved measure, which supporters say will help maintain Temecula's pubic safety and quality of life services. Opponents, however, said council should have balanced the current budget better.

The new tax rate will go into effect on April 1, 2017.

The deadline for a recount request is Dec. 12.
