Update: Person Killed in I-880 Crash in South Hayward Identified

The highway was closed for several hours.

HAYWARD, CA — A 34-year-old man was killed when one truck crashed into another on Interstate Highway 880 in Hayward early this morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Ronald Chand was the middle passenger in a 2017 Freightliner headed north on the highway this morning, according to the Alameda County coroner's bureau.

For reasons that CHP investigators have not yet determined, the truck Chand was in crashed into the back of a 2009 Freightliner near Industrial Parkway at about 1:40 a.m.

Chand was killed in the crash. Originally from Fiji, Chand lived in Hayward and had just celebrated the birth of an infant son in March.

Friends and family left numerous messages of grief on his Facebook page this morning.

The CHP did not immediately say if anyone else was injured in the crash. Lanes were closed until nearly 5 a.m. as the CHP investigated.
