Smith will begin serving as superintendent on July 1, according to district officials. Smith has been with the school district since 2012, first serving as chief academic officer, supervising the district's Division of Teaching
and Learning.
In 2013, when the district moved to a co-superintendent model, Smith was promoted, along with Chief Business Officer Akur Varadarajan, to co-superintendent.

In Oct. 2016, the district determined the co-superintendent model had served its purpose and began seeking a new district leader, district officials said.
After multiple candidates were interviewed, the board decided to appoint Smith to the role of superintendent.
Smith and Varadarajan will continue serving as co-superintendents through June, according to district officials.
