Suspect Charged with Attempting to Murder Hayward Police Officer

Ronald Higgins, 28, is in custody at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.

A 28-year-old San Leandro man has been charged with attempting to murder a police officer after he allegedly shot at a Hayward officer during a vehicle stop early on Sunday morning, police said Monday. Ronald Higgins is also charged with a second count of attempted murder for allegedly shooting at another person on Saturday night, Hayward police said.

Sgt. Tasha DeCosta said an officer tried to stop Higgins near Winton Avenue and Soto Road shortly before 2 a.m. because he thought the car Higgins was in might have been connected to a shooting that occurred at about 10 p.m. on Saturday. However, when Higgins got out of his Infiniti crossover sports utility vehicle he fired a gun at the officer but missed, DeCosta said. The officer then returned fire but missed Higgins, according to DeCosta.

Higgins fled on foot, but after a lengthy and extensive yard-to-yard search police arrested him about 12 hours later, around 2 p.m. Sunday, at a house in the 300 block of D Street, DeCosta said. Police then were able to link Higgins to the shooting on Saturday night, which occurred in the area of Mission Boulevard and Harder Road, according to DeCosta. In that incident, an occupied vehicle was fired upon and struck by bullets but no one was injured, she said.

In addition to the two counts of attempted murder, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged Higgins with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, being a felon in possession of a firearm and several enhancements clauses, DeCosta said. Higgins is being held in custody at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
