Union City PD Names Officer Of The Year

UNION CITY, CA —The Union City Police Department on Wednesday celebrated its 2021 Officer of the Year, Manny Leon.

Senior Officer Leon, currently the team leader for the department's crime scene investigation unit, was heralded at a breakfast sponsored by the Optimist Club from Newark.

"He is one of the most reliable department members with his willingness to respond at all hours to assist with complex crime scenes and critical incidents," the agency said.

Leon has served in multiple UCPD divisions, including the Community Oriented Policing & Problem-solving Unit (COPPS), with the SWAT team, as a senior Field Training Officer (FTO), and also aided in the department's adoption of new defensive tactics and gear.

"This year, we transitioned our department to new body-worn cameras, holsters, Tasers and the database that stores all of this data," police said. "Manny was instrumental in testing this equipment and transitioning our personnel to this new database."

"Manny is also very community-oriented," the department added, noting his ongoing participation with the "Shop with a Cop" program. "He has been positive in his interactions with the public and makes an effort to represent the department in a positive light."
