BART Closure From South Hayward To Union City Planned This Weekend
Free buses will be provided to transport May 14-15 riders between the stations as trackwork underway.
UNION CITY, CA — A track construction project will close BART service this weekend - Saturday and Sunday, May 14-15 — between the South Hayward and Union City stations. Free bus service will be offered to riders, according to officials.
The closure is among several planned for upcoming weekends, including Memorial Day weekend, as major track replacement is underway. Preliminary work on a new storage facility for hundreds of "Fleet of the Future" cars at BART's Hayward maintenance complex also is ongoing.
Crews will be replacing outdated wooden rail ties with more reliable concrete versions and placing new rock ballast to improve track stability, the agency said.

"This critical work will replace nearly 50-year-old track infrastructure," officials said. "Many of these aging track components have been in operation since the beginning of BART service in 1972 and have outlived their design lives. "
The map below shows the bus bridge service planned for the upcoming weekend. Bicycles are welcome on the bus bridge, with an AC Transit bus capacity of three bicycles per bus, operators said.

Riders are advised to add 20 to 25 minutes to their trips, officials said, adding that checking the BART Trip Planner for departure times between Berryessa and Union City is also recommended.
Other upcoming, planned BART shutdowns, due to construction, between South Hayward and Union City include:
- May 28-30 (Memorial Day weekend);
- June 11-12;
- July 16-17;
- July 30-31;
- Aug. 13-14;
- Sept. 3-5 (Labor Day weekend);
- Sept. 10-11.
The trackway improvements and Hayward complex project will continue into 2023, with a series of weekend track shutdowns expected between Union City and Fremont. Dates for those shutdowns are not yet finalized, the agency said.
Funding for the track replacement comes from voter-approved Measure RR, and funding for the new rail car storage facility is provided in part by a $1.17 billion grant from the Federal Transit Administration. The storage facility is part of the Transbay Corridor Core Capacity Program, which will dramatically increase the number of trains BART can run through the Transbay Tube, BART management said.
