Gas Leak Reported In Venice/Mar Vista/Santa Monica

A gas leak was reported in Venice/Mar Vista/Santa Monica, Fri. Residents reported an awful smell as they evacuated. SoCal Gas investigating.

VENICE, CA — A potential gas leak was reported in the Southland on Friday, evacuating several neighborhoods. The cause of the gas leak was not currently known.

Residents reported an awful smell in and around homes, and a sensation of lightheadedness over social media.

At approximately 12:30 p.m. SoCal Gas began receiving numerous reports of an odor in the Venice Beach area, SoCal Gas representative Christine Detz said. They are also aware that there were additional reports of the gas smell migrating to the West Los Angeles area.

By 3 p.m. authorities determined the smell of gas in the area of the 500 block of South Venice Boulevard in Venice is from methane and likely coming from the ocean, Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

All were reminded that if you smell gas, you should leave the area and then contact your local Gas company.

TIPS: According to the SoCal Gas Company, if you suspect a natural gas leak in your area, hear hissing sound of gas escaping, or smell a gas leak:

  • IMMEDIATELY EVACUATE the area, and from a safe location either call 911 or SoCalGas at 1-800-427-2200
  • DON'T smoke, or light a match, candle or other flame.
  • DON'T turn electrical appliances or lights on or off, operate motorized equipment or vehicles, or use any device that could cause a spark.

Call 1-800-427-2200 24 hours a day, seven days a week; or call 911.
