Caltrans Repairs To Close Caldecott Tunnel
Overnight closures on eastbound Highway 24 for lighting upgrades and maintenance work this week.
WALNUT CREEK, CA — Drivers heading through the East Bay this week will need to plan ahead as crews shut down part of a major commuter route overnight for repairs.
Caltrans will close Bore 1 of the Caldecott Tunnel on eastbound State Route 24 during two overnight windows to complete lighting upgrades and routine maintenance.
Crews will close the bore from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, and Wednesday. Officials say the schedule could change depending on weather conditions. A shutdown on April 1 was rescheduled.

While crews block access to Bore 1 this week, the remaining bores in both directions will stay open, allowing traffic to continue moving through the corridor between Alameda County and Contra Costa County.
Caltrans will post changeable message signs to guide drivers through the area. Even with those measures, officials urge motorists to expect delays, allow extra travel time, and use caution in the construction zone.
