Deadly Small Plane Crash On Mt. Diablo

The wreckage was discovered near the summit.

EAST BAY — The pilot of a small plane was killed when it crashed on Mount Diablo Friday night. The plane took off from Hayward Executive Airport bound for Lincoln, in Placer County, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said Saturday.

Ian Gregor of the FAA said a single-engine Mooney M20 aircraft crashed into a hillside two miles southwest of the peak of Mount Diablo near Summit Road at an unknown time Friday night. On Saturday, a family member of the pilot reported the aircraft was overdue.

The wreckage was spotted about 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Contra Costa County coroner was called to the scene that is within Mount Diablo State Park in unincorporated Contra Costa County, state parks police spokeswoman Gloria Sandoval said Saturday.

The name of the pilot was not made public as of late Saturday afternoon.

The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation into the cause of the crash. Gregor said it typically takes the NTSB a year or more to determine a probable cause of an accident.
