Maui Welcomes Visitors Back With a Call for Connection and Care

More than two years after the Lahaina wildfires, Maui is welcoming visitors again—while asking for something deeper in return.

“We need you to come back,” says John Pele, executive director of the Maui Hotel and Lodging Association. “You are an important part of our recovery.”

Tourism remains a critical part of Maui’s economy, and the effects of the fires continue to impact local businesses, workers, and families across the island.

While much of Maui is open—including popular areas like Wailea, Kīhei, and Kā‘anapali—Lahaina is still rebuilding. Visitors are encouraged to approach their trip with awareness and respect.

“Some people are still healing. Others are asking for your business. It’s a balance,” Pele says.

For those looking to make a meaningful impact, supporting local businesses, seeking guidance from hotel staff, and considering volunteer opportunities can all play a role in the island’s recovery.

Travelers can still experience Maui’s natural beauty—but many are finding deeper value in connecting with the community behind it.
