New Walnut Creek Coronavirus Death As County Death Toll Hits 151

Hundreds of additional cases were added Thursday alone in Contra Costa County.

WALNUT CREEK, CA — Contra‌ ‌Costa‌ ‌County‌ ‌health‌ ‌officials‌ ‌Thursday‌ ‌reported‌ ‌another‌ ‌243‌ ‌confirmed‌ ‌coronavirus‌ ‌infections‌ ‌and‌ ‌two‌ ‌additional‌ ‌deaths,‌ ‌including‌ ‌the‌ ‌first‌ ‌one‌ ‌in‌ ‌El‌ ‌Cerrito‌ ‌since‌ ‌the‌ ‌start‌ ‌of‌ ‌the‌ ‌pandemic.‌ ‌The‌ ‌other‌ ‌was‌ ‌in‌ ‌Walnut‌ ‌Creek.‌ ‌

The‌ ‌total‌ ‌number‌ ‌of‌ ‌cases‌ ‌recorded‌ ‌since‌ ‌early‌ ‌March‌ ‌stands‌ ‌at‌ ‌10,482,‌ ‌and‌ ‌the‌ ‌death‌ ‌toll‌ ‌from‌ ‌coronavirus‌ ‌rose‌ ‌to‌ ‌151.‌ ‌

This‌ ‌has‌ ‌been‌ ‌a‌ ‌particularly‌ ‌deadly‌ ‌week.‌ ‌Seven‌ ‌deaths‌ ‌were‌ ‌reported‌ ‌on‌ ‌Tuesday,‌ ‌three‌ ‌on‌ ‌Wednesday,‌ ‌and‌ ‌two‌ ‌on‌ ‌Thursday.‌ ‌

Hospitalizations‌ ‌are‌ ‌back‌ ‌under‌ ‌100‌ ‌patients‌ ‌in‌ ‌the‌ ‌county,‌ ‌with‌ ‌95‌ ‌people‌ ‌suffering‌ ‌from‌ ‌COVID-19‌ ‌complications‌ ‌currently‌ ‌receiving‌ ‌care.‌ ‌Across‌ ‌the‌ ‌Bay‌ ‌Area,‌ ‌there‌ ‌are‌ ‌632‌ ‌patients‌ ‌hospitalized.‌

Here‌ ‌in‌ ‌Walnut Creek ‌there‌ ‌have‌ ‌still‌ ‌been‌ ‌24 ‌deaths‌ ‌and‌ ‌427‌ ‌confirmed‌ ‌cases.‌ ‌Just six cities in the county have higher case counts than Walnut Creek —

  • Antioch: 1338
  • Concord: 1295
  • Pittsburg: 1080
  • San Pablo: 913
  • Bay Point: 510

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital Association have released a report that shows a 40 percent increase in pediatric coronavirus cases nationwide in the last two weeks of July, with nearly 100,000 testing positive in that time.

Here in California, more than 57,000 children have been diagnosed with confirmed cases of coronavirus from the start of the pandemic through Aug. 12, making them 9.6 percent of cases.
Just one child has died of COVID-19 complications in California.
