Plans For A 4,320-Square-Foot Taiwanese Community Cultural Center Cleared Another Hurdle Thursday

WALNUT CREEK, CA — Plans for a 4,320-square-foot Taiwanese Community Cultural Center cleared another hurdle Thursday evening when Walnut Creek planning commissioners voted to approve the project.
The Taiwanese American Culture Center Of East Bay would be stand at 1755 Sunnyvale Ave.
The commission waived requirements for an 8-foot masonry wall along the eastern property line included in the city's municipal code for commercial buildings.

Instead design plans include a 7-foot-tall wooden fence that would more closely match the residential style of nearby houses, according to project plans.
The new center is designed to offer "cultural enrichment classes" for adults, an afterschool program, and Sunday church services. Except for Sunday services, operations would be Monday through Friday, with each program operating on different days and at different times.

The existing office building at the eastern corner of the site would be demolished to make way for the new center, landscaping, and public walkways.
The commission's chairman, Brandt Andersson, said the agency rarely gets a project of this size without a lot of questions.
The proposed development still has more steps, including establishing a new cultural institution.
