In 1981, John H. Russell Jr. and his wife, Barbara Russell, purchased the business. Today, Barbara leads the company and continues the family legacy.

"I saw what my father-in-law, mother-in-law, and husband John put into the business to get it to where it is today," Barbara says. "It’s my desire to keep that going for as long as I can."

Rossmoor Realty is one of the longest-running family-owned real estate companies in the Bay Area. The firm focuses exclusively on Rossmoor, a secure, gated 55+ community in Walnut Creek with approximately 6,500 homes, some offering views of Mount Diablo.

The neighborhood includes two golf courses, four swimming pools, and facilities for tennis, pickleball, lawn bowling, and bocce ball. More than 200 clubs and a full calendar of events contribute to its active environment.

"With 10,000 residents, it’s almost like its own little city," says a broker associate at Rossmoor Realty who also lives in the community. "I tell people that living in Rossmoor will add 10 years to your life. You have everything for your mind, body, and spirit right here."

Agents at Rossmoor Realty guide clients through each of Rossmoor’s 23 homeowner associations. Many clients are downsizing or relocating to be closer to family, and the brokerage provides support tailored to those transitions.

The office culture reflects that approach.

"We’re very collaborative. We see each other as a team," says Larry Spiteri, broker of record.

Several agents and staff members have remained with the company for decades, including graphic designer Lou Landgraf.

"Rossmoor is just a great community, full of vibrant people who are still really active," Lou says.
Recognizing that many clients are making a full relocation, the company also established J.H. Russell Real Estate Group. The sister company assists clients with selling homes outside the Rossmoor gates, helping streamline the overall move.

Rossmoor Realty operates seven days a week and supports local initiatives, including the Rossmoor Scholarship Fund.

After nearly six decades, the brokerage continues to serve as a resource for those exploring life in Rossmoor—offering guidance through both the real estate process and the transition into a new chapter.
