Couple Busted Smoking Pot In Car With Toddler In Backseat: Police

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA – A 23-year-old man and 22-year-old woman were arrested in Salinas on Tuesday evening after an officer found them smoking marijuana in a vehicle with their 1-year-old daughter inside, according to police.

The arrests came after officers were checking on a suspicious Honda in the parking lot of Natividad Creek Park at 1395 Nogal Drive shortly after 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.

When they contacted the driver, Faustino Matias, he rolled his window down and a large cloud of marijuana smoke came from inside the car, where Claudia Campos and their 1-year-old daughter were passengers, police said.

The couple were "hot-boxing" the car, filling it with smoke, with the child in the backseat, according to police.

After some initial difficulty waking the child, paramedics transported her to a hospital as a precaution and she was eventually cleared and placed with Child Protective Services, police said.

Matias and Campos were taken to Monterey County Jail to be booked on suspicion of felony child endangerment and other offenses.
