SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — Santa Cruz County was removed from California's monitoring list Friday, meaning many businesses and organizations may resume offering indoor services if the county stays off the list for 14 consecutive days.

Gov. Gavin Newsom shared the news during a Monday news conference. While another five counties were added to the state's watch list — the step before counties are placed on the monitoring list and subject to business restrictions — Santa Cruz County was the only state to be removed from the list.

San Diego County will likely be removed from the monitoring list soon, Newsom said.

Santa Cruz County was added to the monitoring list late July. When that happened, indoor operations were forced to close at fitness centers, hair salons, nail salons, tattoo and piercing parlors, massage therapy businesses, non-critical office and shopping malls. Those services can reopen if the county remains off the list.

There were 1,454 cases of the coronavirus reported in Santa Cruz County as of Monday afternoon, including 1,055 active cases.
