California Coronavirus: Live Updates On Reopening, Orders, Cases

Here's a roundup of all the coronavirus developments in California as of July 19.

CALIFORNIA — As promised, Gov. Gavin Newsom laid out specific criteria Friday for the reopening of schools in California. The bottom line: Most schools will begin the school year with distance learning. In order for a school district to open for in-class instruction, it must be in a county that has been off the state monitoring list for 14 consecutive days. Currently, 32 of the state's 58 counties are on the monitoring list.

When students are allowed to return to the classroom, they must wear mask. The requirement is for all students in the third grade or higher. Second grade and younger is recommended, but will not be enforced.

The guidance is for all schools, public and private.

CDC Extends Cruise Ban

If you've been eyeing great cruise deals that arrive in your email or in ads, there's no rush to book a cruise — the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday announced that the no sail order for cruise ships is extended through Sept. 30.

Ships are banned from sailing in U.S. waters.

"Cumulative CDC data from March 1 through July 10, 2020, shows 2,973 COVID-19 or COVID-like illness cases on cruise ships, in addition to 34 deaths," according to the CDC.

Cruise Lines International Association voluntarily suspended cruise ships sailing from U.S. ports through September 15, the group announced in June.

Health insurance losses soar in CA

As the number of daily coronavirus cases continues to hit record levels in the United States, a staggering number of people in California and elsewhere have lost their health insurance benefits due to coronavirus-related job cuts.

According to a new study by Families USA, a nonpartisan consumer advocacy group, 5.4 million non-elderly Americans reported losing their health insurance between February and May.

That increase in the number of people uninsured is 39 percent higher than at any annual increase on record, according to the study. The previous record was set in 2008-09, when 3.9 million people became uninsured.

An estimated 13 percent of non-elderly adults in California are currently uninsured, according to the study.
