Watsonville Has HOW Many Taquerias?

Try to guess. It might surprise you.

Watsonville residents love their Mexican food, so much so that an inordinante number of taquerias operate in the city.

Guess how many.

You can try to count, but humans don't have enough fingers to even get close to the total number. Use the Patch business directory to look them up if you like, and leave a review of your favorite, to help others find their way through the overabundance of burrito options.

But that may still take awhile. There's a lot.

Now as you're trying to guess, you may wonder how I came up with this Total Number of Taquerias figure.

Well, Kurt Overmeyer, the city's economic development director, clued me in on the number of taquerias in Watsonville during the van ride between stops on Rep. Luis Alejo's business tour Tuesday morning (more on that later).

It came up because we drove past the Wall Street Inn on Rodriguez and West Beach Streets, where the owner is building a restaurant space into the first floor of the building. No takers on renting out that restaurant area yet, but another person in our van suggested Chipotle. Apparently, the chain won't consider Watsonville because of all the local taqueria competition.

So how many are there? Leave your best guess in comments. If no one gets it, I'll post the correct answer Friday morning.
