Watsonville's Green Valley Road Slide Repair Project Completed

The Green Valley Road Slide Repair Project began in January of this year and was just recently completed on October 28, 2019.

Green Valley Road Slide Repair Project

Watsonville Public Works & Utilities Department’s David Caneer, Principal Engineer, and Steve Hernandez, Water Services Manager, were lead in this slide repair project on Green Valley Road. The project began in late January 2019 and was just completed on October 28, 2019.During the heavy rainfall of February 2017 a portion of the slope on the southeastern embankment of Green Valley Road experienced significant surficial movement. The project area is southwest of Carey Ave. and approximately 60’ wide along the entire height of the 50’ slope. The City hired a specialty contractor to install a Geopier “SRT” system encompassing 174, 10’ deep steel plate piles at 4’ on center to reinforce the slope.

The green material shown in one of the photos is hydroseed, which is a water/seed mix that germinates to vegetate the bare soil on the finished slope and hold it in place during rains to prevent erosion. The hydroseed used in this project is all native seed mix.

This roadway embankment stabilization project helped prevent further slope movement and the potential collapse of the city’s major arterial, east-west, roadway. The project cost was $176,036.48 and was funded by the City’s roadway improvement fund.
