The City of West Hollywood is getting the word out that Metro is starting community outreach for the La Brea Avenue Bus Priority Lanes Project. Metro is planning peak-hour (7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.) bus lanes on 5.9 miles of La Brea Avenue from Sunset Boulevard (at the north) to Coliseum Street (at the south). Though much of the proposed project is in the City of Los Angeles, it includes three blocks of N. La Brea Avenue in the City of West Hollywood from Romaine Street to Fountain Avenue at the City’s east boundary and impacts transit users in West Hollywood. Shared bus/bike lanes were recommended for this segment of La Brea Avenue in the City of West Hollywood 2017-adopted Pedestrian and Bicycle Mobility Plan.

Proposed bus lanes would operate on weekdays-only from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., replacing the additional travel lane in each direction that becomes available during peak hours when curbside parking is prohibited. Metro will be conducting outreach along the corridor throughout Fall 2021 and anticipates the project would likely be implemented by Spring 2022.

West Hollywood community members are encouraged to attend Metro’s upcoming virtual community meeting to find out more about the project and to share feedback with Metro. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. via Zoom at:

A mobile technology pop-up unit with laptop stations and a screen will be available, as well, in the City of Los Angeles to ensure opportunities for public participation for people without access to computers or smart phones on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the LADOT Public Parking Lot #614, located at 728 S. Cochran Avenue in Los Angeles.

Metro’s La Brea Avenue Bus Priority Lanes Project is anticipated to improve speed and reliability for existing transit service on La Brea including West Hollywood’s free Cityline Commuter service to the Hollywood/Highland Metro B (Red) line station and Metro Line 212, which connects to stations for the Metro B (Red) and E (Expo) Lines, as well as the under-construction D (Purple) Line station. Metro Line 212 saw more than 12,000 daily boardings prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Three out of four bus riders on the corridor do not own cars and use the bus system at least five times per week.

In addition, Santa Monica Boulevard at La Brea Avenue is a proposed station location for all three alternative routes under consideration for the future Northern Extension of the Crenshaw/LAX light rail Metro line, so La Brea Avenue Bus Priority Lanes could, one day, improve connections to future rail service.
