Storm Brings Unexpectedly Heavy Showers

Showers are expected to continue into the night with a chance of rain Monday.

An unexpectedly strong low-pressure weather system brought some heavy showers to the region today, triggering flash flood warnings in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

At around 10 p.m., radar indicated a band of very heavy showers was moving toward the Colby Fire burn area in the hills of Glendora, the National Weather Service said.

A flash flood warning for the area was in effect until 12:15 a.m. Monday, with the NWS advising residents to take immediate precautions to protect life and property.

The Colby Fire in January 2014 scorched nearly 2,000 acres.

Another flash flood warning was in effect for the Silverado Canyon area of Orange County until 4 a.m. Monday as forecasters predicted widespread moderate rainfall with locally heavy showers.

Rainfall rates of half an inch per hour could produce flash flooding and debris flows in Silverado Canyon, the NWS warned.

Showers were expected to continue through the night, with snow likely to accumulate in the mountains. Around an inch of rain was forecast for the San Gabriel Mountains.

The weather on Monday is expected to be cloudy with a 50 percent chance of showers in the morning.
