Boulder Walmart Closing In June

The store had been met with protests when it opened four years ago.

The Walmart Neighborhood Market, which opened in Boulder four years ago, is closing. The retail giant announced Tuesday that June 16 would be its last day.

When it opened in 2013, it was not welcomed with open arms. Residents of Boulder, a historically liberal area, were not overjoyed that the company, whose employment practices are a lightning rod for some political groups, was opening.

A company spokeswoman, however, told The Boulder Daily Camera - which first reported the closing - that politics had nothing to do with the decision.

The spokeswoman says the closure is a reflection of changing times with more people shopping online.

The store's 70 employees will be given the option to transfer to one of the company's nearby Supercenter.
