Fallen Adams Co. Deputy: Hickenlooper Orders Flags Lowered

Gov. John Hickenlooper today ordered flags lowered to half-staff statewide on all public buildings in honor of Deputy Heath Gumm, 32.

DENVER CO, — Gov. John Hickenlooper today ordered flags be lowered to half-staff statewide on all public buildings immediately until sunset on the day of the funeral to honor Adams County Sheriff’s Deputy Heath Gumm.

Gumm, 32, was shot Wednesday night in the chest in Thornton by a suspect after a foot chase. The male suspect pulled out a hand gun and fired at officers. Gumm was taken to Denver Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The shooter was taken into custody, but two other suspects remain at large, a spokesperson for Adams County said.

Gumm has been with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office since 2013. He is survived by his wife and family.

Gov. Hickenlooper expressed condolences in a statement released Wednesday night.

“Tonight we watched as a community was on edge and a sheriff’s deputy was shot while responding to a call in Adams County. We are deeply saddened to learn that the deputy has died from injuries sustained in the shooting. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and the family and friends of the deputy killed. “The investigation is ongoing and authorities continue to work to restore calm to the area.”

Donations can be made to Gumm's family through the Colorado Police Officer's Foundation.
