'Officer Down': Adams Co Deputy Shot And Killed, 2 Men Sought

Manhunt underway in Thornton for two suspects who allegedly shot and killed an Adams Co. deputy.

THORNTON, CO -- A Twitter alert of "officer down" in a residential area of Thornton was issued by Adams Co. Sheriff around 8:09 p.m. Wednesday. The incident occurred near 88th and Dawson Street a few blocks east of I-25. An Adams Co. Sheriff's spokesperson said a deputy breaking up an assault had been shot and killed by a male suspect. Two other suspects escaped and were being sought be law enforcement officers.

The killed officer was identified as Deputy Heath Gumm, 32.

"Officer down, please avoid the area of 88th and Dawson Street. Large perimeter with suspect still at large. Those of you in that area, please seek shelter away from the doors and windows.— Adams Sheriff's Page"

Denver Fox 31 reported a statement from a police spokesperson: “The area is to be considered dangerous. Deputy was shot. Suspect armed, and if willing to shoot a cop, could shoot anyone.” Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots and seeing armed police officers standing near their homes, the TV channel reported.

At around 9 p.m., Fox31 reported a manhunt was underway for the shooters.

"We’ve seen officers running with flashlights and K9s," tweeted reporter Michael Konopasek "They are combing this neighborhood looking for the suspected shooter. SWAT uniforms seen as well."

A suspect was taken into custody, but possibly two others remain on the loose, Denver7 reported.

Gov. John Hickenlooper expressed condolences for the officer who died in a statement released Wednesday night.

“Tonight we watched as a community was on edge and a sheriff’s deputy was shot while responding to a call in Adams County. We are deeply saddened to learn that the deputy has died from injuries sustained in the shooting. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and the family and friends of the deputy killed. “The investigation is ongoing and authorities continue to work to restore calm to the area.”
