Gov. Polis Signs Immigrant Driver's License Bill

The law aims to improve the state's workforce.

DENVER, CO — Gov. Jared Polis signed a bill Tuesday that increases the number of offices where undocumented residents can receive driver's licenses. Immigrants who can prove they live in Colorado are eligible.

Immigrants currently pay to receive special licenses in the state; however, they are only available at three Department of Motor Vehicle offices. Under the new law, the licenses will be available at 10 DMV locations.

The special licenses are offered by a dozen other states in the country.

Many agricultural industry leaders in the state pushed for Senate Bill 139 after growing concerns over employees' ability to operate machinery and drive to work. The bill's supporters were also concerned about public safety and a lack of insurance.

The bill was signed during a Commerce City ceremony. The licenses will become available at the 10 DMV locations in July 2020.
