Hiker Rescued: Woman Visiting Golden For Conference Had Been Trapped Under Boulder

The 30-year-old woman from Europe has multiple fractures and was unconscious as she was rescued.

Rescuers from more than a half-dozen agencies worked for hours to rescue a trapped hiker at North Table Mesa Park. The 30-year-old woman, in Golden for a conference, had been caught under a 1,500-pound boulder.

The woman, who has multiple fractures and was unconscious and in critical condition when she was rescued. Workers used hydraulic equipment and air bags to move the boulder.

A Flight for Life medical helicopter than transported her to a hospital.

Officials said the woman and a friend had gone hiking. The friend told rescuers she heard a loud crack, looked up and saw a boulder bearing down on them from 30 feet up.

The boulder pinned the woman's foot and leg.

His friend trapped, he ran for help and found two paramedics from Littleton Fire who happened to be out for a hike. While they ran to help the woman, another hiker ran down the hill to call 9-1-1.

West Metro Fire Rescue said they believe the boulder had shifted because of melting snow.
