Armed Man Shot And Killed By Arvada Police IDed

Police shot a man after he allegedly threatened officers and a K9 police dog with a knife after a domestic dispute

ARVADA, CO -- Arvada police Friday identified the man shot and killed by Arvada police officers Jan. 31 as Adrian Valdez, 39. More information was released about the incident, which reportedly started as a domestic violence call around 7:30 p.m. in the 7300 block of 82nd Way, a police statement said.

Officers learned that Valdez had violated a restraining order by visiting the residence, police said. Valdez also reportedly had a felony warrant out of Pueblo and a Denver County traffic warrant. When officers arrived, Valdez had fled. Officers were told that Valdez was armed.

Later, at approximately 8:50 p.m., officers were dispatched to a suspicious person call in a nearby apartment complex in the 6900 block of W. 84th Way. The description of that person was similar to that of Valdez from the earlier domestic call.

Officers and a K9 police dog arrived on scene where they located a male (later identified positively by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office as Valdez) in an enclosed area of the apartment complex. Officers could see he was armed with a knife and gave several commands for him to drop the weapon, the police statement said. "Valdez instead came at the officers and K9 with the knife and officers shot him," the statement said.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team (C.I.R.T), comprised of Jefferson County law enforcement agencies and members of the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, is investigating the incident. The investigation is on-going, Arvada police said.
