📰 News we're reading

1. Fairview High School Marching Knights building self-confidence in pursuit of 5A state title (9news.com) — Fairview High's Marching Knights in Boulder are grinding through triple-digit heat and construction disruptions to chase a 5A state marching band title this fall. Nearly 100 students are using band camp to build resilience, musical chops, and a tight-knit community that helps nervous freshmen find confidence long after the season ends.

2. Boulder puts search for new automatic license plate reader provider on pause (dailycamera.com) — Boulder's city manager has paused the search for a new automatic license plate reader provider, leaving the city on a month-to-month contract with Flock while officials plan broader public engagement. With more than 40 Flock cameras already in town and a class-action lawsuit alleging illegal surveillance, residents can expect a high-stakes debate over crime-fighting tools, privacy and civil liberties.

3. Colorado Connector passenger rail could reach Boulder by 2029. Here's how the plan would work. (boulderreportinglab.org) — A new Colorado Connector passenger rail line could bring service through Boulder, Longmont and other Boulder County communities as early as 2029, without requiring a new local tax for its starter phase. Trains would run on existing RTD and BNSF tracks, easing traffic on US 36 and the Diagonal while potentially steering tens of millions of dollars to Boulder-area station improvements and better walking, biking and transit connections.

4. Emails show BVSD preparing for possible school closures months before public recommendation (boulderreportinglab.org) — Boulder Valley School District officials were quietly preparing for possible school closures months before publicly outlining options, including analyzing facilities, staffing impacts, and future uses for vacant buildings. Emails show discussions of closing two elementary schools and a middle school, potential partnerships like housing Museum of Boulder collections, and a key Aug. 25 board work session where recommendations will be unveiled.

5. Boulder priest retires after 40 years of service (bucketlistcommunitynews.com) — Parishioners at Sacred Heart of Jesus in Boulder recently packed the pews to celebrate Rev. Greg Ames' retirement after 40 years of priesthood across Colorado. The longtime Boulder-area priest reflected on walking with families through weddings, funerals, illness and his own cancer journey, and says he'll now focus on caring for his father in Longmont while continuing occasional parish missions.
