Colorado Mom, 'Fearing For Her Life' Shoots Son, 23: Cops

Elizabeth Mom told sheriff's deputies she shot her son in self defense, after he allegedly broke into her home and attacked her.

ELIZABETH, CO -- A mother shot her adult son in rural Colorado after he allegedly broke into her home and attacked her, the Elbert County Sheriff's Office reported. Deputies took James Mamich, 23, into custody Thursday.

The incident occurred Monday around 4 p.m. in the 36000 block of County Road 17.

"Mamich, who does not reside at the location, [allegedly] broke into the house and assaulted his mother, who then shot him when she feared for her life," a statement from the sheriff's office said. Mamich's mother called police and reported she had shot her son.

Authorities took Mamich to a local hospital for treatment. He was released from the hospital on Thursday evening and is being held on numerous charges, to including first-degree burglary, criminal mischief and assault. The case is being reviewed by the District Attorney, and no charges have been filed against the homeowner, authorities said.
