📰 News we're reading

1. Save As Your Throw charges taking a hike - The Crested Butte News (crestedbuttenews.com) — Crested Butte residents will see Save As Your Throw trash bills rise next year, with a 64-gallon bin jumping from $15 to about $16.95 a month. Town council opted for the minimum 13% increase to cover program costs, while allowing households to resize bins during August enrollment before final rates are set in December.

2. CB council wants clear goals for corridor plan (crestedbuttenews.com) — Crested Butte’s town council is working to clearly define its goals for the new Gunnison Valley Corridor Plan that will guide growth between Gunnison and Mt. Crested Butte over the next 18 months. Councilmembers want to articulate town values, engage North Valley residents, and coordinate with county planners so Crested Butte’s priorities are reflected in the final vision.

3. Crested Butte Titans basketball starts summer with busy June (crestedbuttenews.com) — Crested Butte’s Titans boys’ basketball team is riding a busy summer of camps and tournaments after returning nearly its entire lineup from last season’s 11-13 campaign. Players have trained since March, traveled to major university camps, and stacked up strong wins against regional opponents, building confidence and chemistry for what they hope will be a breakout 2026–27 season.

4. Corn lilies and one-eyed sheep (gunnisontimes.com) — If you’ve noticed tall corn lily stalks around Crested Butte this summer, you’re seeing one of our area’s most abundant—and surprisingly toxic—wildflowers in a relatively strong bloom year. Long-term Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory research reveals how these plants clone themselves, affect livestock, and may flower less often as the climate warms, potentially reshaping local wildflower displays.

5. Weekend things to do: Denver French Fest and more (denvergazette.com) — Crested Butte is about to burst with color as the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival runs July 10–19, offering locals and visitors guided hikes, art workshops, gardening and cooking classes, and jeep tours. While the roundup focuses on Denver-area happenings, this festival in town is the standout mountain escape for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in peak wildflower season close to home.
