Best U.S. Cities For Beer Drinkers: Denver Makes The List

DENVER, CO — Drinking beer is a favorite pastime for many Americans across the nation, but have you ever wondered which U.S. city was the best for ale aficionados? Many Denverites will be shocked to find out that a recent report didn't place their city in the top five.

The personal finance technology website SmartAsset recently released its annual Best Cities for Beer Drinkers rankings.

Denver ranked 6th on the overall list. So why weren't we in the top five? We lost points for our cost of beer, and the number of bars in our city.

• Breweries per 100,000 Residents: 11
• Average Number of Beers per Brewery: 88.9
• Bars per 100,000 Residents: 27.1
• Average Price of a Pint: $5

Cincinnati ranked as the best city for beer drinkers in the country, the researchers found, followed by St. Louis, Missouri, and Portland, Oregon.

SmartAsset looked at 350 of the largest cities in the United States across five key metrics of beer drinking, including the average number of beers per brewery and the number of bars per 100,000 residents.

Each key metric was then listed with its corresponding weight, and the cities were graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the best possible conditions for drinking beer in a city.

The personal finance site also offered tips for good financial practices while enjoying a pint, such as, “As you run up a tab, be smart about your paycheck. When you’re excited about having a night out on the town, it’s important to understand how much of your paycheck you can afford to budget for the festivities.”

2. St. Louis, Missouri: 97.97
3. Portland, Oregon: 97.65
4. Asheville, North Carolina: 97.54
5. Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: 97.08
6. Denver, Colorado: 96.69
7. Bend, Oregon: 93.27
8. Madison, Wisconsin: 92.59
9. Missoula, Montana: 90.10
10. Cleveland, Ohio: 89.06
