Colorado Worst State For Hail Damage In 2018: Report

One of the largest insurance providers in the country said they received nearly $600 million in hail damage claims in Colorado last year.

DENVER, CO — Colorado led the country in hail damage in 2018, according to a recent State Farm report. Policyholders in Colorado filed $598 million in hail damage claims, passing Texas, where $437 million in claims were filed, the data show.

Colorado and Texas were followed by Illinois, Minnesota and Nebraska. State Farm paid $2.7 billion in claims last year in the U.S.

More than 66,000 hail damage claims were filed in Colorado last year, many which went to vehicle damage, State Farm reported. More than 24,000 claims were filed for damage to homes in the state.

Colorado policyholders filed 27 percent more claims in 2018 than they did in 2017, when $436 million was claimed, the company said.

Storms in Denver and the northern Front Range last June caused a lot of the damage. Another storm in August injured dozens of people and killed two animals at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

Texas led the nation in hail damage in 2017, with Colorado coming in third.
