DENVER, CO—Denver native David Lawler is adding a new job title to his already impressive portfolio. In addition to his current role of chief executive of BPX Energy, starting July 1, Lawler will assume the position of chairman and president of BP America Inc., succeeding Susan Dio.

“Beyond a track record of delivering strong safety, environmental and commercial results, Dave brings an authentic and inspiring leadership style. His curiosity and willingness to do things differently will be essential as we reinvent BP and re-imagine energy for people and our planet," BP CEO Bernard Looney said.

Lawler’s appointment comes as BP continues responding to the COVID-19 crisis, focusing on protecting employee health and safety, supporting frontline workers and the communities where it operates, and strengthening its finances.

Lawler has served as CEO of BPX Energy since 2014. In 2018, he led the $10.5 billion acquisition and integration of BHP’s American shale assets, bp’s largest acquisition since buying ARCO in 1999. BPX Energy delivered more than $240 million in acquisition synergies in the first year, far exceeding initial expectations of $90 million.

In addition to focusing investment on the highest quality barrels – aimed at delivering returns and cash flow rather than production volumes alone – Lawler’s team also developed oilfield infrastructure to lower operational emissions and eventually eliminate routine flaring in the Permian Basin.

“Every day the BP America team works to deliver the energy the world needs. I’m honored to help them do that while also driving our transformation to become a net zero energy company,” said Lawler. “And we are committed to performing while transforming, keeping safety our top priority and continuing to provide competitive returns.”

Lawler graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a Bachelor of Science in petroleum engineering before earning an MBA from Tulane University. He joined BP from SandRidge Energy, a U.S.-based oil and gas independent, where he had served as executive vice president and chief operating officer.
