Denver is One of the Top 25 Cities for Flight Delays

Even though Denver has been cited as one of the US cities with the most flight delays, a new study shows the average delay time is only 32 minutes. The average time of a flight delay changes, of course, based on where you are. Some cities have an average flight delay time of merely 20 minutes, while others have an average delay time of more than 40 minutes.

While weather often makes for delays, the midwest and Colorado in particular have been hammered by heavy snowstorms over the last few weeks. It complicates travel, for sure. This past week alone over 750 flights were delayed or cancelled due to snow.

One thing is definite when it comes to flying in and out of Denver: check the forecast. In the future things might change as DIA expands, giving additional gates to a handful of different airlines. United Airlines in particular will increase by 24 gates, giving the airline nearly 90 gates at DIA total.

Frequent Denver travelers know the struggle DIA has been through over the last few years. Construction and expansion plans have been in the works for years, beginning “on the ground” in 2018. Consequently this project affected the way travelers can move through the airport and recent reports say the project of expansion won’t be finished until 2024.

DIA does have a history of starting expansion and renovation projects that run over both time and budget, though, as was seen in 2015.
