DENVER, CO – Family members of the security guard fatally shot early Friday morning in the LoDo Denver neighborhood are trying to raise money online to pay for his funeral expenses.

Lucardio Kroener, 28, on-duty as a private security guard, was shot and killed near 14th and Market Streets as he tried to help police capture a suspect from a nearby shooting that happened only minutes before.

Police are searching for two men in connection with both crimes. Denver police released video surveillance images of the men Sunday night.

Police believe both men were involved in the shooting of a man at 15th and Market Streets that left him wounded around 1:50 a.m. Friday morning. As officers responded and closed off the area to search for the shooters, police believe security guard Kroener, working with Denver police, had a physical confrontation with one of the men. The man fatally shot Kroener and fled on foot with a group, police said. Kroener died at the scene.

Meanwhile, the family of Kroener said he was the father of a young daughter and had a girlfriend.

His sister wrote Sept. 28 on a GoFundMe site that Kroener "was pronounced dead with a fatal gun shot wound to the head."

"Our hearts are beyond broken and can’t even explain what we are feeling right now," Liz Rado wrote on GofundMe. "[M]y brother was truly one in million and was loved by so many. He has so many wonderful friends and family who will miss him dearly !!!!! thank you for all the people who are offering and asking how they can help for now since this was so sudden and so tragic... I also ask that your prayers be sent to his Beautiful daughter Emma who just lost her daddy. "

Rado remembered her brother in a statement released by Denver7:

He was getting ready to start in the police academy and worked hard to give the world for his daughter, now she is going to grow up without her daddy. He will miss seeing her grow and Esmeralda is left without a partner in life. My mother is left without a son, we are left without a brother, an uncle, a nephew and we will miss Luke for the rest of our lives.”
